Be gentle, be kind, and be gracious to yourself, you’re still healing.
We've been in Ohio this week, and while we've spent much-needed time with my husband's family, my children are having the time of their lives.
One of my little ones came to me and showed me his boo-boo. When I touched his cut and asked if he was okay, he quickly brushed it off and kept playing. This made me reflect on my own upbringing. I realized that I was raised with very few kisses for boo-boos and more of a "stop crying, you'll be fine" approach.
In a world that can be so unforgiving, where we often feel pressured to ignore our pain and not show vulnerability, I'm being reminded to be gentle with myself, to tend to my wounds,
and to give myself the time I need to heal.
Sometimes the words of others and the emotional unavailability from our loved ones can leave us deprived and longing while blaming ourselves for it.
This week's introduction and first chapter were powerful. As we seek to reclaim our inner artist, chapter one starts by talking about recovering a sense of safety. It covers the topics of 'shadow artists'—those who have creative aspirations but are not actively pursuing them—negative self-talk, and affirmations.
